Environmental Vision

We contribute to the development of a sustainable society through our business activities and the protection of marine and global environment.

Environmental Policy

  1. We identify environmental impacts of our business activities and set environmental objectives and targets.
We seek to protect all aspects of the marine and global environment through PDCA cycle of the environmental management system.
  2. We put the utmost importance to safe operation of vessels and make our maximum efforts to prevent marine pollution caused by accidents.
  3. We comply with all environmental regulations.
  4. We endeavor to save energy, use resources efficiently, encourage material recycling and reduce waste.
  5. We endeavor to raise environmental awareness among our employees and make them understand our Environmental Policy through environmental education and public relations activities.
  6. We publish our Environmental Policy and disclose our environmental information to the public.

Our Long-term Environmental Goals

With our environmental vision as our roadmap, we have established the following long-term environmental goals in line with the latest IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions to achieve a “low-carbon society.”

〈Phase I〉 From the present through 2030

IMO target
  • = Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships by 20-30% (compared to 2008 levels).
  • = Ensure an uptake of zero or near-zero GHG emission fuels to represent 5-10% of the energy used.
Our policy
  • We will pursue further energy-saving voyages while effectively adapting to weather, ocean, and other conditions
so as to maintain a high ranking in the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) system for all vessels in operation.
  • We will increase the use of environmentally friendly fuels such as biofuels (that can be used with existing facilities).
  • We will increase the number of vessels equipped with fuel-saving technology to further reduce fuel consumption.

〈Phase II〉 2031 through 2040

IMO target
  • = Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships by 70-80% (compared to 2008 levels).
Our policy
  • In parallel with our new shipbuilding plan, we will promote the “fossil-fuel free” initiative by identifying next generation fuels that fit our fleet.

〈Phase III〉 2041 through 2050

IMO target
  • = Reach net-zero GHG emissions from ships by around 2050.
Our policy
  • We will aim to achieve the target of net zero GHG emissions from our vessels in operation by accelerating the use of fuels with zero GHG emissions (in all processes from production to combustion) as well as strictly ensuring energy-saving voyages.
